My Favorite Games, for those interested…
#5 Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles - The simple and intuitive mechanics were brilliantly executed along side engaging multiplayer, hypnotic music, a colorful atmosphere, and a loot system with rewarded skilled play easily enthrall me, my brother, and our childhood friends into countless hours of play.
#4 Borderlands 2 - An epic sequel and expansion on one of the most interesting and engaging universes in gaming history. Borderlands 2 expanded upon and refined everything that made Borderlands good, and turns everything up to 11; adding an actual detailed story with lovable characters and a villain worth hating.
#3 Mass Effect - I will not go into details about my utter disappointment in Mass Effect 2 and 3; Mass Effect 1 was and will always been my favorite, and influenced my life significantly. I think it was the first game where I was like… “Alright… lets actually play a girl,” apart from other games where I was railroaded into play a female character (not that I didn’t enjoy it). It was… alot. The story, the brilliant Characters, the expansive sci-fi atmosphere, all the very 1980′s aesthetics, it was just perfect even with all its flaws.
#2 Destiny - Let me start by beginning with I AM SO FUCKING DISAPPOINT. I have been with this game since day 1, and was very excited for and everything I wanted it to be… it fell far short of those expectations, but still… Destiny is a solid game. While others gave up on the game almost immediately and have since been negative toward the game, I still hold out. I am frustrated with it, but I still care. I still want the game to be good. I still love the game. I can’t not have this game on my list… I played it more than any one game I’ve ever owned. I was engaged more than any other game ever. I love the Lore and underlying Story, and I just wish all that was in the game. The Atmosphere and Aesthetic are perfect and brilliant, and the game just fell short in execution. I am hopeful for the next game, but I really want Bungie to just… stop. Like, stop all else and focus all time, resources, and energy into making the second installment something that will make us forget Year One; that will redeem the franchise, and Bungie.
The game needs to be huge, like Mass Effect, like you guys wanted in the first place. With a world full of engaging characters, like Mass Effect, and questing, like Borderlands, and a reward system like Crystal Chronicles… maybe not exactly like it, but something that makes us care, and where we actually feel rewarded.
And for the love of gawd give us better Character Creation and Customization! Shaders are cool, but they can only go so far, and if your new Content Creating Engine you built for Destiny can shell out a piece of gear in just a few hours, why isn’t the game just flooded with random armors and weapons? Please take a hint from The Division, but please also make higher level character actually LOOK like higher level characters…
#1 Bloodborne - I. Fucking. Love. This game. Just… everything. It has ruined me. It has created the bar for the quality of game I now expect. The atmosphere and aesthetic is delicious. The game mechanics are fucking brilliant and intuitive, and every game every should bind all movement to a single button, fucking fuck. The enemies are all interesting to fight, except for Dogs… Bosses actually feel like a fight, and give you a sense of power and confidence and defeating them is their own damned reward because-
FUCK LUDWIG! FUCK THAT FUCKING HORSE-FURRY FUCK!! AAAAHAHAHAAAAAA LAY SLEEPLESS IN HELL YOU WHINNYING PRICK.
It has changed how I look at story telling and how to hide Lore discretely within every little detail of the game which tells an every deeper and more engaging story which grips you and never lets go. I need more story telling like this in my life. I’m looking at you, Destiny! It is required. No. No more of this shallow and stale saving the world linear writing bullshit. I’m looking at you, Division!
Bloodborne is a 6 out of 5. It tells an epic story while hiding several deeper underlying stories which lead to even MORE story and MORE exploring and MORE blood for the blood god that is me. The Good Hunter. The Cosmic Squid-God of all Hunters. I’m coming for YOU, Oedon. Fear me.
I don’t know who you are, but you just convinced me to pick up a copy of Bloodborne.
